Patricia Shone studied at the Central School of Art, London.
Patricia has always been drawn to wild and challenging landscapes and seascapes. She lives and works on the Isle of Skye, in the North West of Scotland where the views are immense. These views, of monumental mass and close detail; the jewel-like colours of mosses and lichens and the absolute darkness of a peat bank are the elements which inspire the textures of Patricia's work. The visible presence of the rock beneath the thin soils of the Highlands reminding her of the real substance of life, and how fragile the veneer. The textures of her work are the same as those found on a massive scale in the mountains.
"I make mostly functional forms, boxes, bowls, jars, rather than direct representation of the landscape, because they are innately human vessels; they represent the human condition of surface and content."
Patricia uses combinations of hand building and throwing with slips, glazes and various firing techniques to achieve her signature finishes.
Patricia was awarded the prestigious Emmanuel Cooper prize in 2019 as a result of which her work is now held in the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
